ART NEWSLETTER

All classes will soon start the clay unit in the art room. This is always a really popular medium
for kids to work with. It takes several weeks from creation of a clay sculpture to getting to take
it home. I always try to warn the students that they’ll have to be patient, but it can be hard
when they are so excited to take home their work! I love their enthusiasm for this unit! With
over 800 clay sculptures needing to be fired in the kiln once, sometimes twice, it takes a while!

P.E. Newsletter

Hello Olander Family!!

I just wanted to let you know that the 5210 Challenge is starting February 1st! I know we have several “challenges” going on right now at Olander, but I really appreciate you all taking the time to read this email, and help me spread the word to students and their families. I will be hyping up this challenge in P.E., but I would REALLY appreciate some help passing out their log sheets, and showing them a few short videos about the challenge! I have also attached some more information about the challenge as well as some fun facts if you would like to share with your students.

It is your choice if you do the challenge as a class and keep log sheets in the classroom, or you can send them home with kids. There is also a family log sheet that students will take home and have the opportunity to do the different challenges with their family.

In your boxes, you will find yellow, blue, and green log sheets.

Yellow: Student Log Sheets (take home or leave in classroom)

Blue: Family Log sheet (take home in Friday Folder and share with family)

Green: Staff Log Sheet for you to also join the challenge!

Please show your class these 2 videos about the 5210 challenge! They are very short.

Music Newsletter

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy New Year! I hope this newsletter finds you well. This semester is off to a great start! 4th and 5th graders went to the Youth Educational Series (YES) concert on January 17th and had a blast! Students had the opportunity to hear pieces from famous orchestral composers as well as the world premiere of a piece called Vibe by Greg Smith -- an interactive composition about how sound works.

4th and 5th graders are also starting a Hip-Hop unit this week where students will create their own rap (using rhythm and rhymes) about an important figure in their lives, begin playing on piano and drum-set, and discover elements of beat-boxing. 4th grade will use this unit to pair with their 4th grade Colorado History PBL.

K-3rd grades are starting on their Dynamics and Meter units in music and 2nd and 3rd grade will have their PBL performances coming up as well!

Here is some information on upcoming events and activities:

Choir will begin on January 29th!

  • Everyone in 4th and 5th grade is welcome to join choir.

  • Rehearsals are Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:45 to 4:30.

    • These times and dates were decided to help allow students opportunities to participate in more before and after school activities.

  • There will be a final concert on May 9th

    • More performances are TBD

  • There will be a small fee for both the choir and for ordering t-shirts

  • Rehearsals will begin on January 29th!

  • I still need more people for choir! We have 17 as of right now.

  • Our music pieces include selections of world music that includes auxiliary instruments and drums. Students will get to play some of these instruments within the choir. It is going to be so much fun working on these pieces, I would love to have more people join so that it can be the best it can be!

If your student would like to join, please fill out the form and get it back to me ASAP, or send me questions at

ologan@psdschools.org

Thank you all for all of your support this year and I look forward to a great 2019 with everyone.
